How to create sepia image in Photoshop

Kenneth Setzer wrote " Discover Seven Ways to Create Sepia Images in Photoshop":

Like most things in Photoshop, there are probably a half dozen ways to simulate a sepia tone image. What probably comes to mind when you hear sepia is most likely “old-time” photographs. But why is that so? Well, sepia toning was used for a few reasons, artistic and more prosaic.

True sepia toning began around the 1880s with photographic prints that were exposed to sepia in order to aid in replacing the metallic silver in the photo emulsion with a silver compound. By doing so the developer could change the color, obviously, but also increase the tonal range of the photo. It was also believed that the sepia toning increased the photo’s longevity by replacing the less stable metallic silver. Indeed, a lot of sepia prints remain to this day. Sepia, it turns out, is simply ink extracted from a cuttlefish (the European Common Cuttlefish (Sepia officinalis)), a cephalopod closely related to octopuses and squid!

1. Gradient Map Adjustment Layer
2. Photo Filter Adjustment Layer
3. Black and White Adjustment Layer
4. Color Balance Adjustment Layer
5. Hue Saturation Adjustment Layer
6. Curves Adjustment Layer
7. Solid Color Layer

Creating a duotone in Photoshop can get you even closer to simulating a good sepia tone. But there are two reasons I’m not presenting it here. One, there’s already a great tutorial on duotones right here at Convert Duotones in Photoshop. Second, making a duotone requires some “no-turning-back” operations, like discarding color info, that are best avoided if possible.

There you have it. Seven ways to sepia, and I’m sure you can discover more. Personally, I’m leaning towards using the black and white adjustment layer to remove color, and then creating a solid color adjustment layer above it all to add the sepia tone. This gives you a lot of flexibility. The black and white adjustment layer makes fine tuning your tones easy, and can always be undone and tweaked in the future. The solid color layer lets you change the tint at any time also, and you can more completely control the opacity, and blend mode, of the sepia tint. Best of all, no cuttlefish were harmed in the making of this article.

CoffeeShop - Free Actions and Tutorial - Great !!

Coincidentally, I found this through Flickr's forum and checked out there. Yes, this is very, very, very great to learn how to create actions because this owner made many tutorials about that. You can check out there whatever you want to know and then you will learn step by step. Me, too, still learn more and more. There are so many great tutorials, installing actions, template-Paper-Patterns, etc.

BARISTA ACTION FOR PS AND PSE
1. Open the image you wish to process.

2. File then Duplicate (opens a copy of your file to work on so your original does not get altered, great to see Before/After)

3. LEVELS: Add a Levels Adjustment layer. Use your black eyedropper to click on something black to remove any color cast. You can also click on something white with the white eye dropper. If your photo looks worse, then reset and click somewhere else until you get the look you want. Then adjust Level's sliders to taste. I usually move the midpoint over to the left a bit to lighten the midtones.

4. DODGE/BURN: Add a new blank Layer above Levels and call it Dodge/Burn. Fill it with 50% gray and put the blending mode in Overlay or Softlight. Type B to get your brush tool and use a low opacity (10% or so) soft brush and paint over anything you want lightened. I usually paint over skin and eyes to brighten them a bit. Then, using a low opacity soft black brush, paint over anything you want darkened. I usually darken the background some, or you can use this method to paint a vignette around the edges of your photo. Increase the opacity to 25% or so if you are
doing a vignette. If you completely mess up, then just Edit then Fill Layer then 50% gray and it returns your layer back to the original setting, and repaint.

5. CONTRAST: Select Background, Ctrl-J to make a copy. Change the blending mode to Soft Light and move the opacity down to 25%.

6. SHARPEN: Select Background, Ctrl-J to make a copy. Run the Unsharp Mask over this layer to sharpen your image. I usually start with Amount 125%, Radius 1, Threshold 3. Put the blending mode into Luminosity. Adjust opacity as needed.

7. Color Saturation: Select the Dodge/Burn layer and add a new Hue/Saturation layer above it. Put the Saturation setting on 20 and change the blending mode to Color, Opacity 20%.

8. B&W/Muted Color: Now add a Gradient Map Adjustment layer on top. Make sure it is set to Black, foreground to transparent. This is a great way to turn your photo B&W. Now adjust the opacity of this layer to 0% to keep your photo color, 100% for B&W, or anywhere in between for muted colors. You can also make a B&W image with “colorized” parts. Just adjust the opacity to 100% (so your photo is B&W) and use a soft black brush (opacity of choice depending on how vivid you want the colored parts to be) and paint over anything you want in color.

9. Now you can adjust all of your layers to taste. The opacity's I gave you are just a starting point so don’t be afraid to change them.

10. Flatten your image and save! Rerun the action on this image once again to get a really vivid photo.

How to make actions

You don't have to buy actions, but you can also create by experimenting with photo shop.
I found this tutorial of how to make actions from caffeine_overdosed
Hopefully this is very helpful for you all.

Photoshop, Caffeine uses Photoshop version 7.0 so this MAY NOT work in lower versions.
She grabed a random stock image she got mine from http://yellow-stock-deviantart.com
So, what things do you want to do with the image, purple or blue, sharp or blurry?

First off all, you open Photoshop.
Then you created a new document and paste your image on a new layer. Before you do much more, open Notepad or your other word processing program. Play around with you image until you get the desired result, all the while keeping a record of everything you done in Notepad.

Two steps
Now you're happy with your image, it's time to make the action to reproduce the effect. Open a new document and again paste the image on a new layer. If you don't have the actions window showing then go to WINDOWS > ACTIONS or ALT + F9. Then, create a new actions folder and within that create a new action.

Three steps.
Now simply redo all the steps that you have recorded in Notepad. Be careful of things like copying and pasting the image, a better solution is to duplicate the original image and drag it to the top seeing as you won't always have your image on clipboard. Also, in a lot of cases I find it is a good idea to merge the layers at the end of an action for ease of use. Press "stop button" to finish.

Four steps.
This step is optional and only needs to be used if you plan on moving the actions and / or uploading to the internet or other things as such. Select the folder you have the action in and press the arrow on the side of the window and select "save action". The action will be in C/Program Files/ Adobe Photoshop 7.0/ Presets/ Photoshop Actions /

LAST - THE RESULT.
How things turned out.

Enjoy yourself by experimenting actions.

Tutorial - How To Apply Textures - Part 3

by: flickr.com/photos/bpuppy
Bpuppy wrote this tutorial on his flickr. Hopefully, this is very helpful for all of you.

The great benefit I love about textures that it gives your photo a more artistic feel but if it is not done properly the textures will add distraction to your photo.

First thing first:
1.Textures do not work for every photo so do not feel bad if the texture does not work on a particular photo.
2. Sometimes you can spend hours playing textures so be patient.
3. You can use multiple textures on a photo but don't over do it.

On to the tutorial.

Here is the beginning photo

Here is the final results of the texture on the photo

1. Open the photo that you desire to use the texture on.

2. Open the texture that you desire to use.
a. The texture that I used can be found here:

3. Copy and paste the texture on the photo.
a. Select All (Ctrl+A) on the texture
b. Copy (Ctrl+C) the texture

3. Select the photo

4. Paste (Ctrl+V) the texture on the photo.

5. Resize (Ctrl+T) the texture over the photo.

5. You have various ways to blend the texture on the photo I generally go with 3 blend modes:
a. Multiply – dark grunge look
b. Screen – old worn page look
c. Overlay – antique grain look

6. For this photo I decided to go with the Multiply blend mode.

7. Now adjust the Opacity level of the texture layer to bring the subject in the photo out more. In this photo I set the opacity level to 82%.

8. Finally I generally remove or lower the texture blend over the subject.
a. Create a layer mask on the texture layer.

b. Select the paint brush tool.
c. Make sure the foreground color is black to remove the texture completely or gray to lighten the blend of the texture layer.
d. Paint in the layer mask the area you want to remove or lower the blend of the texture.

That's it. Enjoy!!

Proccesing Images With RAW

Written by Sabina

A raw image file contains unprocessed or unmodified data straight from the camera’s sensor. A raw file obtained from a digital camera is the equivalent of the negative image of film photography, it has all the necessary information to create an image. In the past, only expensive professional cameras were able to save images in a raw format. Nowadays, more and more digital cameras offer you this option. By saving your pictures in raw format, you will analyze the image taken and make the necessary adjustments. By comparison, by saving a picture in a compressed format (JPEG), you let the camera’s internal algorithms deal with the image’s characteristics. By choosing to shoot raw, you can use editing software (such as Adobe Photoshop) to set the image’s settings: white balance, tonal range, contrast or the amount of sharpening.

In conformity with the camera used to take the picture, the resulting raw file will have different extensions: .nef (for Nikon cameras), or .crw (for Canon cameras). You can use import the raw formats from many camera manufacturers into Adobe Photoshop for further editing. Adobe Camera Raw (ACR) is the Photoshop’s component which allows you to process the raw files.

When you start editing a raw camera file, Photoshop does not alter the initial file content. After you have performed the desired modifications, you export the edited image and in this way the original remains unchanged.

You can open raw files with both Adobe Photoshop and Adobe Bridge, as they have the identical Camera Raw dialog box.

You can check out this website:

How to Create Clone Shots

by *betenoir*

by Gogoye

By: Mr.Malique

Have you ever wondered how Mr Malique creates his clones? Well, I’m here to teach you how to clone yourself just like Mr Malique does it!

Yeap, for my maiden post on this blog, I’m gonna do an in-depth tutorial on how to create your own clones, using Adobe Photoshop.

Here’s a list of tools you will need to be able to do this tutorial along with me.

  1. A digital camera. You got a spankin’ brand new DSLR like Yanni’s Nikon D80? Great! You got a point-and-shoot consumer camera? No problem too! What? You want to use a film camera? Erm… Possible… But will be more than doubly troublesome. Let’s keep things simple and I shall assume you own/can borrow a digital camera. :)
  2. A tripod. A must. Okay, not exactly a must, but it will make things so much easier. Easy is the keyword in this tutorial, okay?
  3. Adobe Photoshop. Any version will do, as long as it supports layer masking. I’m not familiar with other programs, but if the graphics program you’re using allows you to mess around with layer masking, you’d probably be able to adapt the steps here to fit that program.I shall be using Adobe Photoshop CS3 Extended.
  4. Of course, you will need a computer. I shall assume you have access to one since you’re reading this entry. :PMac or PC, whatever your choice may be, it will suffice. Personally I use a PC.

But before we begin the tutorial proper, I am going to have to assume several things about you:

  • You have taken photographs before, and know the basics of your camera, for example, how to take a correct exposure and how to set the timer.
  • You have used Adobe Photoshop before, and you know what layers are.
  • You know how to use your computer, whatever the flavour may be.

Now that all that is over, let’s get started!

Check out this website:

Build Your Photoshop Skills by Controlling Color With Curves

Digital Toolbox

.

It's a good thing photographers are inclined toward the technical. What other artists would accept that the best way to perfect their masterpiece is by manipulating points on a graph? But when you get good at using Adobe Photoshop's Curves tool, you'll be able to make very fine adjustments to color and contrast very quickly.

Luckily, it's not as hard as it looks. Here are some ways to get started, and some hints for using CS3's improved Curves interface. By the way, this is the one big gun that Adobe has continued to withhold from Elements in its full form, but you will find Curves in Lightroom.

More of Debbie Grossman's Photoshop tutorials can be found in the Digital Toolbox archive.

Lomo Photo

Like photo that looks like old photo or lomo shots?

But you don’t know how to make it?

Let’s follow these steps that made by Brian Auer, who is a photography enthusiast. Well, first of all, Read what Vignette is as Brian Auer explained here.

Vignette (pronounced vin-’yet) is a sort of framing element that you’ll sometimes see in photos (particularly older photos or Lomo shots), in which the image fades out toward the corners. It’s most commonly seen as a fade out to black, but white is also used sometimes. The vignette can be a powerful element of the photo because it has a natural tendency to draw the eye toward the center of the photo.

Vignette can be produced naturally if you’re using a lens intended for a smaller medium (like using a dSLR lens on a film SLR), because parts of the lens actually block out some of the light from hitting the sensor or film. There are a few other methods of getting the vignette effect, but the simplest of them is with Photoshop. Also, using Photoshop will allow you a wider range of control since it can be adjusted many times without destroying pixels.

  1. DO THIS AS YOUR LAST STEP IN PHOTOSHOP!!!
  2. Create a new empty layer on top of the stack. Ctrl + Alt + Shift + N
  3. Fill the layer with pure white. Shift + Backspace
  4. Set the blend mode to “Multiply”. Alt + Shift + M
  5. Apply the vignette filter to the new layer.
    Filter >> Distort >> Lens Correction…
  6. Mess with the “Amount” and “Midpoint” sliders in the “Vignette” section.
  7. Press “OK”, and now you have art!

You’ve officially added vignette to the photo in a non-destructive manner using Photoshop. If you decide to come back to the photo at a later time and you want to change the vignette, just refill the top layer with white and repeat lens correction. This isn’t the only way to do this (and I apologize to those who don’t use Photoshop), but it’s the easiest and safest way that I know of.

Enjoy trying!!
