Wermade of Carbon and Osmosis by Roseonthegrey

Here I found very great tutorial through Roseonthegrey who has a great conceptual taste of photography . However, you can also find much more tutorials (she just created her new website), check out here

It's easy, isn't it ? Okay, let's try for fun !!

The Result :

You will need:

  • A square vase
  • Styrofoam
  • A needle, small nail, or pin
  • A background (paper, fabric, laptop monitor)
  • A cherry or some other object
  • A small bottle of plain seltzer water/carbonated water/sparkling water/etc (you can also use sodas but because of their sugar content, clean-up can get quite sticky)
  • Towels for cleanup

Procedures

  1. Cut a rectangular piece of Styrofoam that is about 1/2in longer than the length of the square vase. The Styrofoam piece’s width should match that of the square vase. The extra length will allow the Styrofoam to push against the square vase. The resulting tension should hold the Styrofoam in place.
  2. Place the cherry on the Styrofoam piece at the desired location. Secure the cherry in place with a needle, small nail or pin. The needle should penetrate the cherry at an angle to most effectively secure the cherry and keep it from floating. Bending the needle will also help secure the cherry.
  3. Push the Styrofoam into the square vase. Be careful not to crack the Styrofoam! Push on the sides along the length of the Styrofoam for the best results. Adjust and cut the Styrofoam as needed.
  4. Place the square vase in front of a background. A laptop monitor was used for Osmosis (See: Results - Right) while a Fossil watch-box was used for wermadeofCARBON (See: Results - Left). A laptop monitor acts as an extra light source so if too bright may cause underexposure of the foreground.
  5. Add the seltzer water! Wait a few minutes for bubbles to form. The longer you wait, generally the larger the bubbles. Do not shake or move the square vase. Movement will keep bubbles from forming on the cherry’s surface.
  6. Play with different backgrounds – solids, stripes, polka dots, dark, light – and see how they affect the appearance of the cherry and bubbles.
  7. Set up your camera, preferably on a tripod and shoot. A macro setting or macro lens is preferred. If you do not have a macro lens, a small magnifying glass can create a great macro effect. Both wermadeofCARBON and Osmosis were taken at 18mm with a magnifying glass.
  8. Clean up!
